Over the last few weeks, eighth graders have been designing and crafting their own ceramic mugs in South Orangetown Middle School Art teachers Allison Meyers and Tatiana DiPierno’s classes.
Leading up to the December recess, students first came up with their design concepts before building their mugs. This week, students will finalize their designs in clay by incorporating their own personal touches to their mugs such as flags to represent their nationality, logos of their favorite sports teams, character logos and more.
Once students have completed their designs, the next step will be to use an underglaze before it’s fired up in the kiln. Students will finish their mugs by painting them using shiny glazes to add color and make them food safe.
