World Read Aloud Day at WOS

Students at William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School participated in World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday!

“We were so excited to participate in our third World Read Aloud Day! We host this day to not only encourage reading, but the art and practice of reading aloud. Students listen to the authors of a wide variety of books read them aloud and ask them questions about their craft,” explained K-5 Instructional Literacy Coach Kristy Nadler, who organized the event.

The annual celebration is recognized worldwide as a way to bring people together through the shared connection of reading aloud and sharing stories. This year, 16 authors joined our classrooms via Zoom throughout the day to read their books aloud, provide insight to their writing process and answered questions that students had including how long it takes them to write a book and what their inspiration was for their books.

Children’s authors that participated included Adriana Bergstrom, Hanh Bui, Melanie Ellsworth, Nadine Funseca, Jo Watson Hackl, David Kelly and Bryan Patrick Avery. “This event helps students see themselves as authors, illustrators and storytellers,” noted Nadler. “Every author has encouraged the students to read books they loved when they were younger or current children’s books.” Thank you to all of the authors who volunteered their time to talk with our students!
