South Orangetown Central School District

K-5 Math Night

At the District’s annual K-5 Math Night on Wednesday, teachers from William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School, along with student volunteers from South Orangetown Middle School and Tappan Zee High School, hosted tables featuring a variety of hands-on activities inspired by math topics including fractions, geometry, measurement, operations and number sense.

“This year is our 8th annual Math Night! It is a night that was designed for families to come and get to have fun with math. Many people can become fearful of math because they feel they are not good at it. So, with a night like this, families can play math games and do math crafts to help alleviate some fear that comes with math and to show that math can be fun,” explained K-5 Math Instructional Coach Shannon Bogart, who organizes the event. “We hope that by coming to an event like this, families will get a chance to have a good time with numbers and shapes and start to have some conversations around math at home.”

Activities included making geometric shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows, forming numbers with playdough and math-inspired card games. Students and their families also got to learn all about pi from TZHS students to prepare them for Pi Day on Thursday! Each station also included activities that families can try at home and books to read based on each topic.
