Last Thursday, Tappan Zee High School French V and Italian V students toured the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, where they learned about the international organization and visited the General Assembly Hall and Security Council meeting chamber.
“Our students asked questions about UN translators and the languages spoken by the 193 UN Member States, which was of particular interest,” noted Italian language teacher Maria Bruno. “We also heard about many of the UN initiatives, including its 17 world Sustainable Development Goals, and how the different bodies within the UN work together to implement them.”
In addition to discussions in their advanced World Language courses, students also learn about the UN as part of the high school social studies curriculum.
