South Orangetown Central School District

Congratulations to Daniella, Emma, Kelly, Jennifer, Genesis and Samantha and their families–the newest graduates of SOCSD’s ParentChild+ program!

The proud grads are the second cohort of children to complete the nationally-recognized research-based, early childhood literacy and parent support program launched by the District in partnership with Rockland 21C in 2019. ParentChild+ is offered at no cost to families who may not have access to preschool or face other challenges and features twice-weekly, 30-minute home visits with Early Learning Specialist Laura Andreotti over a two-year period. Children start the program between the ages of 18 and 24 months and sessions focus on modeling reading and educational play.

“This is our District’s second group of graduates and our fourth year of ParentChild+. Students in our first group are enrolled at William O. Schaefer Elementary School and are doing well,” Family Engagement Center Coordinator and Registrar AJ Walker said. “Our next cohort begins in Fall 2023 and it is already full.”

During the brief ceremony on Tuesday at the Blauvelt Sons of Italy, each child was called to the stage individually to receive certificates of completion and flowers for their families. “Parents are their children’s first teachers and the parents of our graduates were really involved. This is a substantial, long-term commitment and I’m proud of what they have accomplished,” noted Andreotti.

Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Karen Tesik, Ed.D. added, “ParentChild+ is about building the home-school connection early to support school readiness, socialization and a love of learning. It also helps families find community and support each other.
