The Tappan Zee High School National Art Honor Society hosted its first-ever Induction ceremony on May 19! During the student-led ceremony, 16 juniors and 14 seniors were officially inducted into the brand-new TZHS Chapter of the National Art Honor Society, which was established last Fall.
To celebrate their first induction ceremony, TZHS Art teacher and Art Honor Society Advisor Nina Genovese along with members of the honor society collaborated with the Bell-Ans Center of Creative Arts to host an art show featuring work created by members as well as ninth and tenth grade students.
President Ava B. worked with classmates and TZHS Art teachers Genovese, Donna Grasso, and Leigh LaBrake to create and lead the TZHS National Art Honor Society. “I’m so lucky to attend a school that has such a dedicated and encouraging art department, and to be surrounded by so much artistic talent,” said President Ava B. “We created this honor society to spread our love of art to the rest of the school and our community. We want to create a safe space where the artists of our school can create and share their work not only to grow their abilities, but to inspire others around them.”
During their first school year as an honor society, members kick-started a variety of projects including creating caricature booths at sports events and during lunch periods, curating a K-12 district-wide art show to celebrate Youth Art Month in March and they’re currently working on their biggest project yet— creating a mural for the Town of Orangeburg. The mural will be located along the rail trail located off of Old School Lane and has been organized by President Ava B., Vice President Maryn M. and Historian Catherine G.
The TZHS National Art Honor Society art show at Bell-Ans is open now until June 10 and visiting hours will be on the weekends from 12PM-2PM. Members of the National Art Honor Society will be available to provide tours for the art show.
