The South Orangetown Central School District is seeking requests for quotes from interested consultants for the following positions:

South Orangetown Middle School

Spring Musical Position Openings
Performance Dates: 3/8/2024-3/10/2024

  • Art Director
  • Assistant Director
  • Backstage Director
  • Choreographer
  • Costume Director
  • Lighting Director

Art Director

  • Creates the artistic vision for the production; all the scenery, furniture and props the audience sees at a production of a play make up the set design
  • Instructs and works with students on painting backdrops, painting sets and flies
  • Selects paint and other supplies that will be needed for the sets
  • Works with the Lighting Director to ensure their vision is fully carried out once the performance is lit
  • Approximate hours: 4 months

Assistant Director

  • Assists the director and takes the lead when the director is unavailable
  • Blocks scenes with cast members
  • Assists with scenery layout
  • Involved in casting/auditions
  • Assists Director in all aspects of producing the show
  • Approximate hours: 8 months

Backstage Director

  • Supervises Stage Crew.
  • Organizes backstage storage areas for rehearsals and performances in cooperation with the Stage Crew.
  • Works with students managing props.
  • Manages student behavior backstage.
  • Teaches students to safely move scenery on and off stage in the dark.
  • Approximate hours: 3 weeks

Choreographer

  • Creates original choreography
  • Teaches and notates dance steps and formations
  • Cleans dance combinations
  • Teaches techniques and dance steps
  • Works collaboratively with the Director and designers to fulfill the vision or concept of the production
  • Works with Director and Assistant Director to integrate choreography into the production
  • Empowers and motivates participants to perform to the best of their capabilities
  • Assists Director, Music Director in creating weekly schedule
  • Attends all scheduled rehearsals
  • Attends all production meetings
  • Participates in the audition process
  • Approximate time: 3 months

Costume Director

  • Responsible for the costumes the students wear while onstage
  • Measure students for proper fit
  • Makes sure all costume pieces are kept clean and organized
  • Approximate time: 10 weeks

Lighting Director

  • Responsible for the design, installation, and operation of the lighting and special electrical effects used in the production
  • To show where the lighting equipment will be placed, the Lighting Designer produces a light plot specifying the placement and configuration of all instruments used in the production
  • The Director must also furnish all associated paperwork for the design, including hook-ups, schedules, cut lists, and a cue synopsis
  • Must also help and train the students on all aspects of lighting design, running the board, equipment, installation and operating spot lights
  • Approximate time: 3 weeks

Director: Is responsible for choosing a show by reading many scripts/scores to make a selection, choose audition material and make copies available. The Director meets with the Assistant Director, Set Director, Art Director, Business Manager, Lighting Director, and for the Spring Musical the Music Director, Choral Director and Choreographer. During these meetings you will discuss the vision for the production and make sure that all members of the team are on the same page.

Art Director (Set Designer): All the scenery, furniture and props the audience sees at a production of a play make up the set design. The set designer’s job is to design these physical surroundings in which the action will take place. A theater set should: (1) suggest the style and tone of the whole production; (2) create mood and atmosphere; (3) give clues as to the specific time and place of the action; and instruct and work with the students on painting backdrops, painting sets, flies, selecting paint and other supplies that will be needed for the sets.

Assistant Director: Duties of the AD are quite flexible and will vary from production to production and Director to Director. The AD’s responsibilities may include facilitating the rehearsal process, taking notes, and facilitating the smooth running of the entire production process, and/or other duties as assigned. Specific duties and tasks will be decided based on the abilities of the assistant and the needs of the show. Will be responsible for attending rehearsals, overseeing cast, and completing tasks asked of them by the director; including creating the program, overseeing student director and or any other student directed positions. They will also be a part of the casting, helping with choosing a show, serve as a liaison between all involved directors/student directors.

Backstage Director (Costume Director): Is responsible for the visual appearance of the actors. These responsibilities include what is seen (clothes, shoes, hats, purses, canes, parasols, jewelry, wigs, makeup, etc.) as well as what isn’t (corsets, hoops, boning, character elements such as padded stomachs, etc.). Designs for theatrical costumes consist of colored sketches depicting the clothing and accessories that will be worn by the actor. The Costume Director is also responsible for taking all measurements, overseeing the costume crew, renting or purchasing needed costumes and keeping track of those pieces. The Costume Director shall keep all receipts and turn in paperwork in a timely fashion.

Lighting Director: Responsible for the design, installation, and operation of the lighting and special electrical effects used in the production. To show where the lighting equipment will be placed, the lighting designer produces a light plot specifying the placement and configuration of all instruments used in the production. The designer must also furnish all associated paperwork for the design including hook-ups, schedules, cut lists, and a cue synopsis. They must also help and train the students on all aspects of lighting design, running the board, equipment, installation and operating spot lights.

Set Director:Meets with the art director to gain a vision of what is required. Determines measurements of all scenery pieces.Builds all necessary pieces needed for the production, from flats to platforms, furniture, etc.

Choral Director (Spring Musical Only): Is responsible to discuss with the Director the pros/cons of doing a particular show, schedule and hold rehearsals. Be present at the auditions to discuss casting with the Director and the Assistant Director. Teach all the songs to the cast and ensemble.

Choreographer (Spring Musical only): Creates original choreography, teaches and notates dance steps and formations, cleans dance combinations, teaches techniques and dance steps, and may run fitness conditioning warm-ups with actors. Is part of the audition process, auditioning chorus and principal characters of the musical chosen. Must set their own schedule and relay that information to the director. Choreograph solo pieces, ensemble numbers as well as assist with some blocking when needed as per request of Director/Assistant Director.
