South Orangetown Central School District

Last evening, families participated in fun, hands-on science activities during the annual K-5 Family Science Night held at William O. Schaefer Elementary School!

Teachers from WOS and Cottage Lane Elementary School hosted a variety of science and STEM inspired activities that allowed students to engineer, analyze, hypothesize and problem-solve. “The purpose of the event is to show families that science doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. It shows that you can do science at home with simple materials,” explained K-8 Instructional Science Coach Samantha Levine. “We hope that families take away that science is all around us and there are simple things we can do to introduce and reinforce science concepts learned in school.”

Students rotated between several stations that cover topics including chromatography, static electricity, camouflage, engineering, chemical reactions, potential vs. kinetic energy and light and shadows.

Save the date for our next K-5 family fun night, K-5 Technology Night, on Wednesday, November 15, at Cottage Lane Elementary School!
