WOS Second graders hold their legacy rocks

Second graders celebrated their final days as William O. Schaefer Elementary School students during the annual Legacy Rock Ceremony on Monday morning!

“Each year we have our second graders ‘leave their mark’ on WOS by painting a special rock that they place in the garden outside of the school. This year, they placed their rocks around the new WOS flower bed near the front sign. This was extra special because our second graders planted all the flowers and placed their rocks near their flower,” explained WOS Principal Sheila Beglin.

Over the last several weeks, second graders have been painting their legacy rocks during their art classes with WOS Art teacher Liz Piteo, who first began this tradition in 2020. This spring, WOS parent volunteers Ashley Libersher and Kris Haberman from T.H.E. Garden Club expanded the school’s garden program and worked with each second grade class this month to plant flowers in a new “WOS” garden bed on the front lawn.

This morning, students gathered for the special ceremony and planted their legacy rocks along the perimeter of the new garden bed. “By planting your legacy rocks today, you’re leaving a piece of your heart here as you grow up and move on to a new school,” said Piteo.

“We would like to thank our art teacher, Liz Piteo, for organizing this as well as Kris Haberman and Ashley Libersher for creating the WOS garden and facilitating the planting with the second graders,” said Beglin. “We wish our second graders well as they move up to Cottage Lane Elementary School. They have worked hard, made special friendships and have truly left their mark at WOS. We will miss them!”
